Nestled into a hillside in West Austin, the magnificent Hurt family home was built with the goal of feeling like it had been part of the landscape for decades. Virtually no trees were removed for it to fit in its final location. This spacious, luxury home takes on a minimalist energy approach with the use of foam insulation, solar hot water, rainwater collection for whole-house potable use, and energy-saving lighting and mechanicals.
In the hills of West Austin near Steiner Ranch lies a gem that we wish we could build over and over. The breathtaking Thoppil family home had all the logistical challenges that come with our Hill Country topography—Challenging enough that the pool you see in the photos had to be built first because there was virtually zero access once the home was built. The home itself was built utilizing ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) for much of the wall construction, making the home one of the most energy efficient homes built in its time. The home was awarded 4 out of 5 stars from Austin Green Building program.
